China Mobile Shows Off Mobile Technologies for Beijing Olympics

Aug 8, 2008

Besides taking the wraps off of its 3G TD-SCDMA network, China Mobile said that it's providing some 25 different types of wireless services to event organizers, media workers and spectators during the Beijing Olympic Games, which start today.

"TD-SCDMA, one of the world's three major 3G mobile communication standards, launched by China, will serve the Olympics for the first time in history. This is a significant opportunity for China's communication industry and independently developed technologies to serve the world," China Mobile said in a statement.

Some of the other services coming under the glow of the Olympic torch include an official Olympics WAP site, push-to-talk over cellular (PoC) services, wireless video and photo transmission and wireless access to the sporting events results system INFO2008.

China Mobile has deployed and optimized TD-SCDMA trial networks over the last year. Its TD-SCDMA networks now cover 10 cities, including all six Olympic host cities in China.

According to Global Insight, China Mobile and Samsung delivered roughly 15,000 TD-SCDMA mobile phones to the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games in April. China Mobile also recently purchased 40,000 additional TD-SCDMA phones for use during the Olympic Games from local vendors ZTE, Lenovo Group and Guangzhou New Postcom.
