Helio Opens YouTube AccessDec 12, 2007 Helio is doing YouTube in a big way. The MVNO today is launching an exclusive YouTube application that gives Helio Ocean users access to not a few thousand YouTube videos but tens of millions. Most YouTube experiences on mobile phones have been about passive viewing, but Helio, after months of collaborating with YouTube, now offers its members the ability to use core YouTube features like rating and commenting. Each of the videos is optimized for the mobile device. "We still have a video on demand but this takes that to a whole new scale," ensuring there's something there for everyone, says Rob Gelick, vice president of media and community services at Helio. Helio members can browse and upload previously saved videos or record new ones and upload them directly to YouTube. They can give the uploaded videos a title and description and set them as public or private. With the Ocean's GPS, members can send GPS coordinates with their video to show where they were when it was taken. In a press release, Helio CEO Sky Dayton said Helio is taking YouTube beyond anything else on the market, letting members view tens of millions of videos but "also giving them true community interaction comparable to the Web and even beyond the Web." |
