Cingular Launches BlackBerry PearlNov 30, 2006 Cingular Wireless is the latest U.S. carrier to introduce the new BlackBerry Pearl from Research In Motion. The carrier has wrapped up a few holiday surprises for Pearl shoppers, including push-to-talk (PTT) and GPS navigation capabilities. The quadband Pearl offers a digital camera, multimedia capabilities and an expandable memory slot, which is a new feature for a BlackBerry device. The BlackBerry Pearl also comes equipped with music player, another first for the handheld. The camera and music player are among the features RIM expects will appeal to consumers. Cingular is not the only carrier to offer the device. In fact, the Pearl arrived in the United States in September through a deal with T-Mobile USA. Cingular, however, is touting a few exclusives offered with its Pearl, including PTT and TeleNav GPS Navigator, TeleNav's GPS-based navigation service. The PTT service will run customers an additional $9.99 a month per device, while the TeleNav GPS service costs $9.99 a month for unlimited trip information. Customers interested in purchasing the Pearl can do so for as low as $199.99, after rebates and a signed 2-year service deal. The device will hit select Cingular retail stores and its online shop this Friday, Dec. 1. The carrier will unveil the device nationwide on Monday, Dec. 4. RIM rival Palm also is trying to move beyond the boardroom. On the heels of the Pearl unveiling, Palm introduced a new version of its Treo smartphone, the Treo 680. Cingular also is selling the Treo 680 to its customer base. |
