Telus Launches Mobile Music Subscription Service

Nov 15, 2006

Canadian telecommunications company Telus has dipped its toe into the mobile music subscription arena. With the Telus Mobile Music subscription service, subscribers can download unlimited full-track music within an "all you can eat" monthly subscription fee from select mobile phones.

According to Robert Blumenthal, senior vice president of Products and Services for Telus, the operator has been enormously successful with its existing pay-per-use full-track download service, and the subscription model plans to build on that success. The service will offer full-track music downloads from major global record labels EMI Music Canada, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group.

Blumenthal said the subscription model will make it simpler for subscribers to enjoy hundreds of thousands of new tracks from the largest music labels.

The service is available to subscribers with the LG Chocolate (LG 8500), LG 8100 and Samsung A950 phones. For $20 per month ($15 music content charge plus a $5 download charge), subscribers receive unlimited downloads to their mobile phones. As an introductory offer, Telus is offering subscribers who sign up before the end of the year two months of free service.

The Telus Mobile Music storefront is powered by Musiwave, an Openwave company, using the Adora content delivery platform from Digital World Service (DWS). Telus also selected digital rights management (DRM) provider SDC to provide full DRM protection and its DRM Java Music player client application on copyrighted music content for both the subscription offering and the a-la-carte service. The solution protects artists' copyright and meets record industry requirements for mobile distribution, particularly within a subscription model.
