Vodafone Unveils Global Mobile TV

Dec 6, 2005

Vodafone is jumping into the international mobile television market with the launch of its global Mobile TV channels. The European operator plans to roll out selections across its markets this month.

The service is supported by Vodafone live! 3G-enabled handsets and is being billed as an extension of its domestic offerings already up and running in Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain and United Kingdom.

Although programming will vary depending on the market, Vodafone has secured deals with the likes of HBO, Eurosport, The UEFA Champions League, Discovery, MTV, Chilli TV and Fashion TV.

Vodafone says it is launching the mobile TV service because research indicates that TV watching on the go "complements television viewing habits at home."

"Attracting world-class content providers, such as Twentieth Century Fox Television and HBO, ensures the premium quality of this product and underpins our confidence in its widespread adoption," says Vodafone's Chief Marketing Officer Peter Bamford.

Pricing will be set in individual markets, according to Vodafone.
