Cingular Goes High Speed

Dec 6, 2005

Cingular Wireless is moving full-speed ahead into the world of 3G with the launch of its high-speed down-link packet access (HSDPA) network in the United States. The carrier initially will offer its BroadbandConnect service in 16 markets.

BroadbandConnect will make its debut in Austin, Texas; Baltimore; Boston; Chicago; Dallas; Houston; Las Vegas; Phoenix; Portland, Ore.; Salt Lake City; San Diego; San Francisco; San Jose, Calif.; Seattle; Tacoma, Wash.; and Washington, D.C. The service will offer customers average data connection speeds between 400 and 700 kbps.

To ensure high-speed connections are not dropped when a customer exits a coverage area, Cingular is selling dual-band HSDPA/UMTS laptop modem cards that are backwards compatible with EDGE and GPRS. The carrier is offering cards from Sierra Wireless and Novatel.

In a conference call today, Cingular executives touted the service's size and scope, as well as it being the world's first commercial HSDPA network with fall-back to EDGE. The carrier expects to reap 45 percent to 70 percent in cost savings as it moves traffic over to the newer network.

The GSM Association also is applauding Cingular's launch. "The commercial launch by Cingular ... shows that HSDPA is a real and robust technology that allows people on the move to enjoy the kind of high-speed Internet access and multimedia experience normally reserved for the desk-bound," said Rob Conway, CEO of the GSM Association, in a prepared statement.

Cingular intends to extend the reach of its HSDPA network next year, as well as add additional capabilities, including the ability to transmit full-motion video and deliver ultra-fast audio.

Even though it is only Tuesday, it has been a busy week for Cingular. Yesterday, the carrier announced the launch of its push-to-talk (PTT) service. The service is being powered by Kodiak Networks' Real-Time Exchange System technology.

Cingular is the first GSM operator in the United States to embrace Kodiak's PTT solution.
