AOL Launches New Search Services

Dec 1, 2005

America Online (AOL) launched new mobile services that it considers the most useful for consumers today, offering search, shopping and Yellow Pages functions.

The usefulness of the search function was a fairly obvious choice when considering what people would want via their mobile phone when on the move, explains AOL spokeswoman Krista Thomas. As for the shopping function, it allows, say, a shopper contemplating an in-store purchase to search online for better prices without leaving the store. The Yellow Pages function allows users to find local listings, then call the business they seek and access a MapQuest map with directions.

AOL tested the search services with beta users in July, when it was easiest to work with Sprint mobile phone service users. The services have since been opened up to all carriers and consumers with Web-capable phones. The services are optimized for WAP 2.0.

What makes the search functions particularly user-friendly are the transcoding and content analysis technologies from InfoGin, Thomas says. The technologies automatically adapt search results and Web pages for the various-sized screens on browser-enabled phones.

The service is free to consumers, although data service charges may apply. Like AOL Web Search, AOL and its partners will generate revenue when users click on sponsored links in each of the three search services.

AOL's new services are another indication the battle over the mobile space is heating up among more traditional Internet companies. Last month, Google announced Google Local, which is designed to give wireless customers access to interactive maps and satellite imagery on their handset. The service provides point-to-point driving directions, as well as the ability to search for local points of interest.
