Cellphone NewsCingular Hears the MusicNov. 14, 2005 Cingular Wireless is adding to its portfolio of music services by launching MobiTV's MobiRadio service, allowing subscribers to listen to more than 40 channels of commercial-free streaming music. MobiRadio, in conjunction with Music Choice, which programs the music channels, features a number of popular genres including rock, urban and country. Rob Hyatt, executive director, entertainment and premium content at Cingular Wireless, says that the operator selected MobiRadio because of its variety of music channels and its ability to support many handsets. "We want to see how customers use it and how much they use it," Hyatt says. The service is available on a subscription basis for $6.99 per month plus kilobyte usage. For now, subscribers must have a Nokia 6620, Nokia 6682, Sony Ericsson S710 and Sony Ericsson to access MobiRadio, but Hyatt says the service will be available on more handsets soon. The service also will likely grow in channels, too. According to Phil Alvelda, chairman and CEO of MobiTV, the company has 40 channels today but will grow to 80 channels. "It's a matter of technology and scalability. We have the capability to expand to 80 channels." Hyatt believes that streaming music such as MobiRadio's service will coexist with other music services such as over-the-air downloads. "This is a great way for someone to discover music," Hyatt says. "And it's low effort from the end-user perspective. I want passive listening with discovery." |
