Cellphone NewsCingular Takes BlackBerry to the EDGENov. 1, 2005 Cingular Wireless has become the first carrier to offer a BlackBerry device engineered to run on an EDGE network. Separately, Cingular also inked an HSDPA supply agreement with Novatel Wireless. Research in Motion's (RIM) BlackBerry 8700c is the first device to debut out of a previously announced partnership between RIM and Intel Corporation. In September, the companies said they were working together to produce BlackBerry devices that run on EDGE networks. At the time of the announcement, RIM said it planned to incorporate Intel's Xscale architecture and PXA9xx cellular processor into future devices. The BlackBerry 8700c supports two browsers: the BlackBerry Browser and a browser designed for Cingular's Media Net wireless Internet access services, according to the companies. Cingular currently has exclusive rights to offer the BlackBerry 8700c. The carrier will begin offering the device on Nov. 21 for as low as $299.99, with a signed two-year service agreement and a mail-in rebate. In other Cingular news, Novatel Wireless has been tapped as a supplier of high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) wireless PC modem cards. Specifically, Cingular plans to offer the Novatel Merlin U730 3G HSDPA Wireless PC Card Modem in markets where it is rolling out its commercial HSDPA network. Last month, Cingular announced completed HSDPA network upgrades in Seattle and Phoenix using equipment from Lucent Technologies and in the Dallas/Forth Worth market using Ecrisson equipment. The carrier has said it is on track to have 15 to 20 high-speed wireless markets up and running, with devices, by the end of this year. The Merlin U730 also will be offered in non-HSDPA markets, since the cards are backwards compatible to EDGE. |
