E-Mail Encryption Comes to the BlackBerry

Oct. 10, 2005

Data Security software maker PGP Corp. announced on Monday a partnership with Research In Motion (RIM) that will allow BlackBerry users to send and receive encrypted e-mail. The new PGP Support Package developed for BlackBerry is expected to be available later this year.

Once available, users will be able to authenticate themselves with a private key pass phrase before decrypting or signing e-mail on their BlackBerry devices. Once signed, outgoing messages will be automatically protected according to centralized policies specified by the network administrator.

The PGP Support Package for BlackBerry is designed to be fully integrated in the BlackBerry user interface to provide seamless e-mail encryption , decryption, digital signature and verification services.

Whole Disk Encryption

This partnership announcement with RIM comes on the heels of PGP's announcement last week of the release of the latest version of the company's Whole Disk Encryption for Enterprise product.

PGP Whole Disk Encryption is designed to offer multilayer defense against laptop , desktop and server data loss by combining four disk-encryption applications into one product.

The new product suite bundles central policy, key management, deployment, pass phrase recovery and Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) integration into one package.

The Whole Disk Encryption product encrypts disks when a laptop, desktop or server is turned off. It also can encrypt individual volumes, folders or files when the hardware is on. Each component of the suite is available as a separate desktop product.

Fills Growing Need

The Enterprise version of the Whole Disk Encryption product, which also comes in a Professional edition, adds a PGP Universal Server for administration, configuration, installation and policy management.

Once a PGP Universal Server has been deployed, additional features can be licensed and other elements of the PGP Universal "deploy-once" platform can be implemented -- including gateway and desktop e-mail encryption, digital signatures, instant messaging security, server-to-server encryption and tape protection.

English, German and Japanese versions of PGP Whole Disk Encryption for Enterprise are available now. PGP Whole Disk Encryption for Professionals is scheduled for release next month.

Single-unit pricing for a perpetual license and the first year of software insurance is $249 for PGP Whole Disk Encryption for Enterprises and $149 for PGP Whole Disk Encryption for Professionals.
