T-Mobile Extends Mobile Internet Service

Oct. 6, 2005

T-Mobile International rolled out its web'n'walk service in the United Kingdom. The company has said it hopes to attract several hundreds of thousands of new web'n'walk customers by the end of 2006.

The service is designed to enable users to browse the entirety of the Internet on their mobile phones. Web'n'walk features the Google search engine as the preset home page of the service. T-Mobile has said it believes the familiarity of the Google page will improve user friendliness for its customers.

While web'n'walk is not the first entry into this category, it may be the "herald of a very important trend in mobile multimedia," said Ovum analyst John Delaney as part of the firm's EuropView Daily Comment service. Mobile operators are beginning to realize that Internet providers have a desire to work with them and that Internet providers face fierce competition within their space, which destroys any "collective leverage they might otherwise be able to exert" on operators, Delaney said.

"Google on your phone is a service proposition which is easy to understand and carries a great deal of initial appeal," Delaney said in his note.

T-Mobile initially launched the web'n'walk service in Germany and Austria in June. The company has said it also has plans to extend the service to the Netherlands and the Czech Republic.
